Quick answers
What is the NATO phonetic alphabet?
The NATO phonetic alphabet, also called the ICAO or international radiotelephony spelling alphabet, assigns a clear code word to each letter, from Alfa to Zulu. It is used in aviation, radio and international phone calls so that letters like B and P or M and N are not confused.
Which spelling alphabet should I use?
In English and internationally, use the NATO alphabet. For calls in Germany, the DIN 5009 table with city names has been the standard since 2022; many people still know the older table with first names.
